But did you know that unlike your real ones, false teeth need to be treated a little differently? In that spirit, here are five denture dangers that you should avoid doing to ensure that your new dentures last as long as possible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Nail Biting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While you shouldn\u2019t have been using your natural teeth to bite your nails either, doing this with dentures is definitely a don\u2019t. Because the materials your dentures are made with are not as strong as tooth enamel, it\u2019s easier to damage them than real teeth. They can easily become chipped or cracked if they bite anything too hard, so be sure to only use them for approved food, and never for things like fingernails, pen caps, or opening packaging!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chewing Gum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that sugarless gum can stick to your dentures? Even gum that supposedly \u201cwon\u2019t stick to your dental work\u201d or that is \u201cdenture safe\u201d can still get caught in them or dislodge them while you\u2019re speaking. If you\u2019d like to refresh your mouth after meals, try a soft, sugar-free mint instead, or rinse with mouthwash after you\u2019ve brushed and flossed your dentures, before putting them back in your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sleeping in Dentures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the first 24 hours with your new dentures, you should be removing them every single night when you go to bed. This is to protect your gums and jawbones, but it can also help extend the life of your dentures. Because many people clench or grind their teeth during the night, this can easily wear them out faster than normal. Thus, remove them each night for a complete cleaning, and then leave them soaking in a glass of water or denture soak so they don\u2019t dry out and become damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skipping Daily Wear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While you should be removing your dentures every single night while you sleep, it is important that you wear them every single day when you are awake. This will help you maintain good control of them while you chew, and ensure that their fit remains secure for as long as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improper Cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While your dentures can\u2019t get cavities like real teeth can, you still need to clean them regularly. Be sure to remove them after each meal and brush them completely with a soft-bristled toothbrush and either mild hand soap or a denture cleansing product. Furthermore, be sure to floss between each tooth and rinse well (never use hot water) before putting them back in your mouth. If you are headed to bed, you can soak them once they are clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, your dentures are a durable, natural-looking way to replace missing teeth, but despite their strength they still aren\u2019t as strong as real enamel.
