How to Take Care of Your Dentures
March 12, 2025

Dentures may not decay or get cavities, but they still need regular maintenance. Not looking after these devices will make them stop working and ruin your restored smile. Luckily enough, taking good care of your dentures is pretty easy; you just need to follow a few simple methods. Your Owasso dentist will even share some really good ones with you! To that end, read on to learn four excellent ways to keep your dentures stable and functional.
Remove & Rinse After Meals
Whether your teeth are natural or not, you should always clean up after a meal. So, remember to remove and rinse your dentures after eating.
The main issue is that dentures can pick up food debris. Once these “leftovers” get wedged between your prosthetics and gums, they can infect and inflame the latter. The best way to avoid such an outcome is to rinse your restorations in a sink after eating. Better yet, put a towel in the sink basin when doing so; it’ll stop dentures from breaking due to falls.
Brush Your Dentures Daily
You would also do well to brush your dentures daily. By doing so, you’ll remove food debris that a rinse might miss.
Of course, you shouldn’t brush your dentures exactly like natural teeth. You must remove them from your mouth first and use a non-abrasive cleanser for the process. Toothpaste is too abrasive for most dentures, with its ingredients often damaging the devices’ materials. The better option is to use antibacterial hand soap or a similar substitute.
Soak Your Dentures Overnight
Dentures may look lifelike, but please don’t wear them to bed. You should instead soak them overnight (in a proper cleansing solution) while you sleep.
As it turns out, using dentures constantly is bad for you. Wearing the prosthetics overnight can irritate your gums and cause harmful bacteria to build up. Even worse, doing so would affect your saliva flow and make denture stomatitis more likely.
Schedule Denture Checkups
However diligent you are, you can’t protect your dentures all on your own. You’ll also need to get regular dental checkups for them.
Don’t forget that dentists are the premier denture experts. They have the most advanced knowledge of your prosthetic teeth, so they can tell if your restorations are ill-fitting, causing issues, etc. They can then perform adjustments (or provide replacements) as needed.
Proper care for your dentures is crucial, so you mustn’t shirk it. Note the facts above so your restored smile lasts for many years!
