4 Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Veneers

Are you getting the feeling lately that your veneers have lost some of their former luster? While veneers can give you a good 10-plus years of service, they aren’t permanent. Over time, normal wear and tear can affect their appearance, function, and fit. If you’ve had your veneers for several years, watch for these 4 signs that it may be time to talk with your dentist about replacing them.

1. Chips and Cracks

Veneers can become damaged from biting hard foods, accidents, teeth grinding, or everyday wear. Small chips may sometimes be repaired, but a larger crack or significant damage may require replacement.

A damaged veneer can also create a rough or sharp edge that irritates your tongue, cheeks, or gums. Don’t attempt to smooth or repair a damaged veneer yourself. Your dentist can determine whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

2. No Longer Look Their Best

One of the primary reasons people choose veneers is to improve the appearance of their smiles. Over time, however, veneers can become worn or develop changes around their edges.

Although many porcelain veneers are resistant to staining, the surrounding natural teeth can become darker or discolored. This can make the veneers stand out and create an uneven appearance.

If your veneers no longer provide the look you want, your dentist can evaluate whether replacement or another cosmetic treatment would be appropriate.

3. Problems Around the Edges

Changes around the edges of a veneer can be a sign that it needs professional attention. You may notice a visible gap, rough edge, discoloration where the veneer meets the tooth, or a change in how it feels when you bite.

These changes can occur as the veneer ages or if the underlying tooth or surrounding gum tissue changes. A dentist should evaluate any new gap or change in fit to determine what’s causing it.

4. Your Veneers Are Causing Discomfort

Veneers themselves shouldn’t cause ongoing pain or significant sensitivity. If you develop persistent discomfort, sensitivity, difficulty biting, or irritation around a veneered tooth, schedule an examination.

The problem isn’t necessarily the veneer. Tooth decay, gum disease, grinding, a bite issue, or another dental condition could be responsible. Your dentist can identify the cause and determine whether the veneer needs to be fixed or you should get a new prosthesis.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

It really varies depending on the material, your oral hygiene, bite forces, habits, and overall dental health. If taken care of properly, many veneers can last for well over 10 years.

If yours have hit the decade mark and any of these signs look familiar, it might be time to contact your dentist.

If your veneers are chipped, worn, loose, uncomfortable, or no longer providing the appearance you want, don’t automatically assume you need an entirely new smile. Schedule an evaluation first. Your dentist can assess the veneers and underlying teeth and explain your treatment options.
