4 Myths About Dental Sedation

With an estimated 73 percent of American adults suffering from some level of dental phobia, visiting your dentist for routine checkups and cleanings can sometimes be a challenge to say the least. But thankfully, your dentist understands this, which is why he’s proud to offer sedation options for patients who need a little extra help staying calm and feeling comfortable during treatment. Unfortunately, however, some people are still hesitant to try this innovative form of dentistry, because they’re afraid of something they heard online or through the rumor mill. Here’s the truth about dental sedation, and why there’s no reason to be afraid to try it!

Myth #1 – Nitrous Oxide Makes You Laugh

Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling gas that you breathe in through a mask that fits comfortably over your nose during your dental treatment. Although it has earned the affectionate nickname “laughing gas” because it makes you feel comfortable and less anxious, it doesn’t actually cause uncontrollable giggles. However, if your dentist is a bit of an amateur comedian or has an arsenal of dad jokes at the ready, you may be more inclined to laugh since you’re already feeling relaxed!

Myth #2 – Dental Sedation is Truth Serum

Many people are afraid that being under sedation will cause them to let skeletons out of the closet either voluntarily or if asked. The truth is, however, that not only will it not encourage you to spill your darkest secrets, but your dental team will never ask you any deeply personal questions under sedation or otherwise. However, in the off chance that you do accidentally voluntarily divulge something private, you can rest assured that your dental team is completely professional, and any information will be kept confidential.

Myth # 3 – Dental Sedatives Are Addictive

The good news is that nitrous oxide isn’t addictive. Unfortunately, just like any other medication it can be abused. The pills used for oral conscious sedation have a higher chance of becoming addictive, but your dentist will only prescribe the exact dosage you’ll need for your treatment, so there should never be enough to form dangerous habits.

Myth #4 – Dental Sedation Lasts Too Long

The duration of the effects of the dental sedation you are taking can vary.  For nitrous oxide, the effects wear off within minutes of stopping. When your treatment ends, your dentist will have you breathe pure oxygen for about five minutes just to be safe, and then you’ll be free to go with no lingering side effects.

For oral conscious sedation, however, it is recommended that you take the rest of the day off from work or school and get a ride home from someone you know and trust. You should be safe to resume normal activities the next day.

Remember, if you experience dental phobia or anxiety that prevents you from regularly visiting the dentist for routine and restorative care, talk to your dentist about your sedation options so you can stay comfortable and get the care you need to protect your smile without fear.
